What I mean by 'pumped up' is when you are doing your 1/2 turn (or however many - not at issue here), when it's pumped up, there is a lot of resistance to the turning of the nut (compressing valve spring), and when it's not pumped up, there is little resistance to the turning of the wrench (compressing the lifter).Bottom line: the top of the plunger in a hydraulic lifter (the cup the pushrod rides in) will reach the top of the lifter when all lash is removed even with the engine off.
