Lyon County, originally established as Breckinridge County and one of the original 33 counties of 1855, was established in 1862. The name was changed to Lyon after Union General Nathaniel Lyon who died in battle in 1862, because John Breckinridge supported the Confederacy, serving in the war and as the Confederate Secretary of War..

Osher at JHU is a membership community providing a vibrant educational and social environment for mature adults. The Institute offers a rich array of stimulating courses, lectures, and activities, along with opportunities for social interaction during fall and spring semesters. The Osher courses and lectures are offered during the day.The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at KU was established in 2004 by a grant for the Bernard Osher Foundation as an outreach program of the University of Kansas. Its mission is to offer noncredit enrichment courses and events to folks over 50 years of age, although we welcome learners of all ages.
